The keeper/loops are designed to stabilise a fulmer or full cheek snaffle bit. This helps to prevent the bit from rolling forward or backward in the mouth in response to either external movement via the reins and/or internal movement through the teeth or tongue.
Many horses prefer the stability that these loops or keepers offer.
